What does play have to do with Bill Gates, Ariana Grande, and Green Day?
Hey there! š
Iām Bituin and I created this newsletter to explore ways to inject more playfulness in our everyday lives. Hereās the manifesto to know more.
Welcome to another issue! I package each newsletter like a fun but healthy snack - something you can consume on the go without the empty calories.
This week's pack includes:
š¬ 1 way to increase your capacity to play and learn
š¬ 1 profile of a successful person and how they use play
š¬ 1 trend to toy around
DIY Think Week
If you've watched the documentary Inside Bill's Brain, you'll be familiar with his think week and that's sort of something we have in common!
One of the privileges I make the most out of is my quarterly mommy time. I book a hotel room or an Airbnb for 2 days, have a pile of books (that I also put in a canvas bag) to read, make sure I have enough water and snacks so I only need to go out for brunch and dinner, and disconnect from the world.
I'm not intentional about brainstorming or coming up with ideas, it just happens naturally so I always have a journal to jot down ideas or add them in my Notion database.
Even if my children are school-age now and I can do this at home on a weekend, the change in environment helps me reset and focus on what rejuvenates me. No distractions, no piles of clothes that need to be folded, nothing that reminds me of small unfinished tasks.
I admit I still struggle with the egotistic thought that if I'm away, the household will fall apart, homework will be left undone and my husband is left alone to manage fights. But it always works out in the end and we come out as better people. Although my son completely forgot to finish his projects dueš
Even if it's just for a day, allow yourself to immerse yourself in something you enjoy doing, such as reading a book or playing an online game without feeling ashamed or guilty.
Ariana Grande and Comedic Timing
The Joker play type is the poster child of playfulness. They are known to monkey around and engage in silly behavior. Being funny is not the goal of the Joker but it's finding the humor and lightening up the mood in situations.
One of the characteristics that Jokers hone is their comedic timing:
Comedic timing is the use of pauses, cadence, delivery, and pacing to land a joke. Itās how the tempo of your acting choices affects the delivery of a single gag or a full comedic scene. The āpregnant pauseā is one of the more recognizable forms of comedic timing. One places a pregnant pause at the end of a joke (right before the punchline) to build suspense and anticipation. Sacha Baron Cohenās āBoratā uses this technique a lot with the filmās schoolyard ā...not!ā joke.
Recently, Ariana Grande was a guest on Saturday Night Live and I noticed how well she did her lines, had good chemistry with her co-actors, and nailed punchlines even while singing. My favorite skit was My Best Friend's House.
Do you have the time.. for some Green Day?
It's been 30 years since Green Day's first album launched (feel old yet?!) and to celebrate, they unleashed Dookie Demastered:

They sold limited edition items such as a floppy disk, a Gameboy cartridge, and yes, even a Big Bass Mouth that played their songs from the album. You can take a nostalgic music trip here. Heads up: the quality of some is terrible on purpose.
What other playful ways of promoting music have you encountered?
ātil next time!
